Sacramento's Acting City Manager Plans to Tread Lightly

Assistant City Manager Gus Vina took control of Sacramento’s day-to-day operations last Friday, after City Manager Ray Kerridge announced his resignation.  The city council appointed Vina for the next 30 days. After that, the council plans to appoint an “interim” city manager to run the city for a year.

Vina hopes the council will pick him for that job – but in the meantime, he’s not planning any major decisions.

Vina: “It would be unfair to take the organization and shake it upside down while council’s trying to decide who’s going to be the interim for the next 12 months.”

Vina says he’s focused on the city’s $35-to-40 million budget deficit. He’s also overseeing Sacramento’s response to a grand jury report that suggests officials misused utility revenues; and an investigation into the city’s building department.

Council members will meet again Tuesday afternoon in closed session to discuss the city manager’s position.
