Placerville Moves Forward With Thrift Store Rules

Ravel Buckley is with the Snowline Hospice thrift store in Placerville. She says it may take a while…but they’re moving forward.

“With all of the zoning changes that are progressing, we would be faced with conditional use and special use permits that would require our operations to perform a certain way and those would be some of the things that may still delay our process.”

A “conditional use” permit puts restrictions on everything from noise and light to hours-of-operation.

Thrift shops have been multiplying in the small El Dorado County town over the past year-and-a-half. But Placerville officials say they don’t generate enough of the city’s total sales tax revenue. And they’re worried the stores will take over prime retail real estate that could attract higher revenue-producers once the economy gets better.

Placerville’s Community Development Director did not return our request for comment.
