Senator Ashburn made the announcement on K-E-R-N AM Radio, to host Inga Barks. He says he always thought he could keep his personal and private lives separate, but that changed when he was arrested for driving under the influence last week:

“When I crossed the line and broke the law and put people at risk, that’s different and so I do owe people an explanation and the best way to handle that is to be truthful and say to my constituents and to all who care that I am gay, but I don’t think it’s something that has affected, nor will it affect how I do my job.”

Ashburn has consistently voted against gay rights. He says he did that because he felt that’s what his constituents would want him to do.  Ashburn represents the 18th Senate district. It includes Kern, Tulare, Inyo and parts of San Bernardino counties.
