Right now, the Exploratorium is located inside the Palace of Fine Arts. But spokeswoman Linda Dackman says plans are underway to move to a new home on the city's waterfront.
“We had been actually looking for a new home for quite a while and we’ve focused on Piers 15 and 17 on the Embarcadero. There are piers that jut out into the water. It’s an amazing location. Ultimately, it will give us a lot of space.”
Dackman says the anonymous donations came from prominent members of the Bay Area's high-tech industry.
The gifts will be used to get the new site ready for the museum within the next three years.
