Governor Schwarzenegger vetoed a bill that could have eventually saved California more than two billion dollars. It included some cuts that Schwarzenegger suggested. But the Governor says the bill didn’t actually make any cuts in the current fiscal year – only put them off until next year:

“I vetoed that bill and I ask them to go to work and to get this bill down as soon as possible and to make these mid-year cuts. I also ask them to create jobs. Let’s put together this job creation package.”

California faces a 20 billion dollar shortfall. The Governor has yet to act on legislation that would save the state one billion dollars by changing the way the gas taxes are collected. Schwarzenegger has signed a number of other budget bills that save the state a total of about 200 million dollars. Democratic Senate Leader Darrell Steinberg called the Governor’s veto “baffling.”
