“We’re still trending upward and we’re still at a level that is historically high.”
Justin Wehner is with the state Employment Development Department. He says most of the job losses can be attributed to the end of the holiday shopping season when retailers cutback on their workers. But he says in the past year…construction, technical jobs and nearly every other employment field has seen losses.
“When we look at the year-over trends we still see about 9 out of 12 industry sectors in negative territory. So we’re still in a tough environment.”
The only sector that’s seen consistent job gains is government…7,000 jobs in January alone - most in education. The hiring by local public schools and state funded community colleges and universities wasn’t necessarily for teaching jobs but everything from custodians to administrators and other staff.
