Republicans are hoping to capitalize on what they see as new momentum this year fueled by voters’ frustration with the status quo. They’re hoping to gain seats in the legislature and Congress. The Governor’s race will be a key focus of the convention. Former E-Bay C-E-O Meg Whitman gives a speech tonight and her rival, Steve Poizner – who’s also Insurance Commissioner – speaks tomorrow night. The two are also scheduled for a separate debate on Monday – but that’s not part of the convention. Other attractions at the GOP event this weekend include speeches from the three candidates hoping to challenge U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer. Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney will also make an appearance. But California’s current Governor will not. Republican Governor Schwarzenegger says he has a prior commitment.

In other political news:

This morning San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom announced he’s running for Lieutenant Governor. He previously abandoned a run for Governor. Newsom’s entry into the race prompted Democratic Senator Dean Florez to drop his campaign for Lieutenant Governor.
