The U.S. Census Bureau sent letters to people around the country this week…designed sort of as an alert, or as spokesman Sony Le puts it:

“…a heads-up that if they get something in the mail next week, please don’t toss it away.”

Le says the form has ten basic questions on it that ask things like: ‘how many people live in your home,’ your ethnicity and whether you own or rent. He says they’re hoping people fill it out and mail it back as soon as possible. But for people who don’t…

“We begin making the list of those who may have forgotten to respond to the census by mail. In late April we’ll begin knocking on doors to collect the rest of the data from households that have not responded.”

Federal officials use census data when they make decisions on distributing money for transportation projects, health facilities and schools.
