The goal is to raise $5.6 million by May 1st. That’s far more money than the group has ever raised before. But it’s how much the Davis Joint Unified School District needs to balance it’s budget and make up for state funding cuts.
Maria Ungermann is vice-president of the Davis Schools Foundation.
“Our focus has shifted a bit. When we were founded, we originally were set up to fund for enrichment programs. But in the last several years, due to the budget shortfalls in California we have modified our funding initiatives to really focus on core programming.”
That means classes like English, math and science…as opposed to music and art. Ungermann says this year they also hope to save 88 out of 100 teaching and staff jobs.
In 2008, the foundation raised more than $1.5 million for the district and saved 25 jobs.
