They’ll be sharing results of their research. One of the scientists who’ll be attending is Marion Whitman. She’s a UC Davis researcher who studies invasive species…a major topic at this year’s conference.
Whitman says the lake’s Asian clam population is growing and that could help usher in an invasion of quagga and zebra mussels.
“When a lot of shells wash up on shore they have an odor, they can cut feet if you walk on them barefoot. And the situation here is no where near like that is but we do have clam shells that are washing up on shores. We get phone calls from locals that are wondering about these clam shells that they’ve never seen before.”
Tahoe agencies have stepped up boat inspections to prevent a quagga or zebra mussel infestation.
Meanwhile, other topics at the two-day conference include: the effects of the Angora wildfire on land and water resources around Tahoe…and the impacts of climate change in the Tahoe Basin.
