Sac Region Could Get New Wireless Company

The consumer need for speed is the big draw for Clearwire Corp. to the Sacramento region.  The Washington-based company is saying little about its plans to establish fourth-generation — also known as 4G — wireless service in the region, from Davis to Folsom, including Sacramento.  But the company has asked permission to install telecommunications equipment and is hiring employees in the region, the most obvious signs that Clearwire will soon compete with other data providers.

The company offers cellular service that covers large areas of a region with speeds that, in some cases, are equivalent to cable or DSL broadband connections.  The high-speed service could operate in the region by 2012.  Clearwire currently operates in 27 markets, including Atlanta, Chicago and Seattle.
