The city council voted unanimously Tuesday to spend $390,000 to help purchase the $1.3 million property called Acalanes Ridge...it adjoins thousands of acres of land that have already been reserved as open space.

Councilman Bob Simmons says the site can be seen from 12 cities.

“The views from the top of this parcel are simply spectacular. We have an obligation to protect and enhance. And that is what the acquisition of this particular parcel means.”

Most of the money is coming from a bond measure voters approved in 2008. Additional funding has been approved by the city of Lafayette, the East Bay Regional Park District and the Muir Heritage Land Trust.

The purchase is expected to be completed later this year. The land trust then plans to build trails, remove fire hazards and install signs welcoming visitors.
