Lodi Endorses Water Meter Payment Plan

The new meters will cost up to $1,200. And Wednesday, the city council endorsed a payment plan…allowing property owners to pay that off over seven-years. Lodi resident Pete Christy says it’ll be a hardship for many people.
“There’s no reason to accelerate this program at this time. We’re in the worst economic conditions in my lifetime. We have a lot of young people that are in the process of losing their homes. You put this on them - $1,200 – it could put them right out of their home.”
But Councilwoman Susan Hitchcock says not accelerating installations would be unfair to residents in newer homes who already have meters. They could be billed at a metered-rate as soon as next year, while other residents would be billed at a flat rate.
“This is not your typical rate increase. This is the implementation of an entire program that is extremely expensive but will provide equity for our citizens.”
About 13,000 properties in Lodi will need to install the new meters.
