Toyota Plant Closure Will Impact Local Economy

Toyota says it’s no longer economically feasible to continue producing a sedan and a pickup truck at the factory in Fremont, so the facility will be shut down April 1st.

Forty-five hundred workers will lose their jobs at the plant, as well as employees at regional suppliers according to professor Jeff Michael of the Eberhardt School of Business at University of the Pacific.

“The people who hold those jobs, a little bit less than half of those live here in the San Joqauin Valley. A large number of suppliers that will be closing are also located here in the valley.”

Employees of the plant have been looking for other jobs in the region, but even though those lucky enough to find one probably won't make anywhere near what they made at Toyota.
