RT Board OKs Major Cuts

The agency’s board of directors voted Monday night to make the cuts to help deal with an $11 million budget shortfall.

“It’s the worst cutback that anyone can remember. At least in the last 40 years.”

Steve Cohn is on RT’s Board of Directors. The board voted to reduce bus and light rail service by 22%. That means…out of 91 weekday routes that RT currently offers, 28 will be eliminated.

Cone says the board was originally looking at making even deeper cuts…but didn’t have to because of two recent developments…the first was new state funding signed into law by Governor Schwarzenegger last week…

“Secondly we directed staff to make even more administrative cuts so we’re now as bare bones as we can get including some security cuts.”

Cone says RT hopes to restore some of the eliminated services once the economy recovers and sales tax receipts pick up again.

The cuts will take effect on June 20th.
