The theft took place just before 11:30 Sunday morning at the Church of the Nazarene on Arden Way. The church was packed for the Easter sermon. And the women were allegedly spotted in a church office…but were gone before church officials were able to verify their identities.
Sheriff's Sergeant Tim Curran says such crimes don’t happen very often.
“Churches rarely are targets of this type of theft. A lot of times they’re victims of vandalism and targeted for that. But as far as robbery, it’s very unusual.”
The suspects allegedly took between $10,000 and $29,000.
They’re described only as black females in their 20s. They left in a faded, black sedan.
Officials are advising parishioners who donated checks to stop payment.
