Shelly Blanchard is with the Cordova Community Council.

“We are so excited. This is considered to be the Nobel Price of civic accomplishment. Cities across the country that have won this award, they use it to attract new business.”

The Denver-based National Civic League puts out the award. Mike McGrath with the league says the cities were selected for addressing such issues as diversifying the labor force and funding services during the recession.

“Ultimately this isn’t just about competition it’s really about trying to sort of showcase innovative efforts to deal with a range of issues within a community.”

In Rancho Cordova, city officials will be showcasing their services for services for homeless kids and immigrant families.

Some of the other finalists include Dublin, California…Des Moines, Iowa…and El Paso, Texas. Ten winners will be announced on June 18th.
