“The fire has been ruled to have been deliberately set and right now it’s an ongoing investigation.”
Captain Jim Doucette is a spokesman for the Sacramento City Fire Department. He says local arson investigators have been joined by agents with the federal bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms. But Doucette says arson investigations tend to take a while.
“It’s like putting together a murder mystery almost. They look for anything that may have been left behind that could’ve started the fire. There’s a lot of chemistry involved so they bring in instruments that can measure for any flammable liquids. It’s a science.”
The blaze happened in the early morning hours of March 28th.
Former Sacramento Councilman Rob Kerth, who is a grandson of ice rink founder William Kerth Senior, says the fire caused about $1 million in damages.
His grandfather started the American Ice Company at the site in 1923…and then created the rink next door in 1940.
