Reno Cracks Down On Aggressive Panhandlers

Police Department spokesman Steve Frady says the sweeps will continue sporadically through the summer.
He says Reno city officials have wrestled for years with complaints from business owners about panhandlers blocking sidewalks, cursing people and making repeated requests for money.

“This is a quality of life issue for the residents. In the aggressive panhandling way of doing things this is a ‘I’m not giving up until you give me something’ approach. And in some cases, elderly residents and some females, this can spur fears for their own safety.”
Two years ago, city council members began considering whether to post signs and distribute pamphlets discouraging tourists from donating to panhandlers.
But the American Civil Liberties Union of Nevada has threatened to sue if the council moved to privatize sidewalks to let store owners chase panhandlers away.
