California Unemployment Creeps Up Again

The unemployment rate in March was 12-point-six percent. That’s up from 12-and-a-half the month before. The state added very few jobs last month – only about four-thousand. Esmael (ESS-may-ul) Adibi (Uh-DEE-bi) is an economist at Chapman University. He says that’s disappointing:

“This is the third month in a row that we’re creating jobs, but the pace of hiring is not what it should be in order to make a significant dent in the unemployment rate.”

Adibi says it’s also a sign that California is lagging behind most of the country in its economic recovery. However, Adibi says he’s not surprised, given the decimation of the construction industry in California and the state’s chronic budget problems. He says there’s something else that may be keeping unemployment high as well, despite the job creation. He says people who had given up looking for work may be back on the job market now that there are signs of recovery. Those people weren’t counted in the unemployment figures when they weren’t actively looking for work.
