Governor Endorses Bill To Curb Teacher Seniority

Appearing at a middle school in the Watts area of Los Angeles on Tuesday, Schwarzenegger endorsed a bill giving school districts flexibility in how they lay off teachers.

The governor says…because of seniority rules, several young teachers have been laid off while ineffective ones keep their jobs.

“Even if a teacher is fantastic and is an award winning teacher none of that matters when it comes to layoffs. The only thing that matters is seniority which means how long a teacher has been working. And that is inexcusable.”

The California Teachers Association opposes the bill. CTA President David Sanchez says it scapegoats teachers during tough economic times. And he says it could make it harder for schools to attract and retain quality teachers.
