Republican Senator Abel Maldonado says he’s spending the hours leading up to the floor vote lobbying lawmakers for their support. He says he wants to get beyond the bare minimum that would make him the next Lieutenant Governor.
I hope it’s not just a 41 vote bill but if it is, that’s what it is, it’s what it is. I still have to work Republicans also, I’ve got my work cut out …”
Maldonado also appeared before the Assembly Rules Committee. There, lawmakers peppered him with questions ranging from state University fees to taxes. The Committee advanced his nomination to the floor of the Assembly, but its Chairwoman Nancy Skinner says she isn’t sure how she’ll vote. She says she has reservations because Maldonado is also running for the office this year.
In my opinion if the governor had wanted to act in a more bipartisan or non partisan way, he would have nominated a person regardless of party who wasn’t intending to run again.”
This time around, Maldonado has the support of Speaker John Perez. If approved by the Assembly, Maldonado’s nomination will move on to the floor of the Senate, possibly next week.
