The San Francisco Board of Supervisors Tuesday night effectively killed a proposed 38-story condo tower next to the landmark building.
Supervisors rejected an environmental impact report for the development after nearly five hours of public testimony.
Although the Planning Commission had approved the EIR, supervisors like David Chiu agreed with project opponents.
“This EIR is fatally flawed. It doesn’t acknowledge the significant cumulative impacts of wind, of shadows, on transportation on parking on transit, on aesthetics.”
Critics say the condo tower would have cast shadows on two public parks and impacted bird migration. But supporters say the project would’ve created much needed jobs.
Condo developer Andrew Segal said he plans to abandon the Washington Street project because it would cost another Million dollars to create a new environmental report.
