The bill by Democratic Assemblywoman Bonnie Lowenthal would strike language from a measure that was written in 1950. The original law came in response to the public outcry over a six year old girl who was murdered by a pedophile. It directed state health officials to research causes and cures of sexual deviation, including sex crimes against children. It also required them to look into the causes and cures of homosexuality. Lowenthal says it’s offensive.
“It was ludicrous then, it’s ludicrous now, it’s time to get rid of it permanently.”
Lowenthal says she first intended to repeal the whole thing. But after the victim’s sister and some legislators raised concerns, she decided to keep the part of the measure aimed at protecting children.
The bill now moves to the state Senate.
