California’s highest mountain – Mount Whitney – is named after him.

Today, Dr. John Parrish is California’s State Geologist and head of the California Geological Survey which is celebrating its 150th anniversary.

Of course, today the CGS is focused on identifying earthquake hazards. But Parrish says the agency still has ties to its original mission:
