A conservation group says it’s met its $12.5 million fundraising goal to protect the 138-acres behind the sign.
And at a press conference yesterday, Governor Schwarzenegger said the landmark is much more than a sign.
“It is a symbol of dreams and a symbol of opportunity and hope. And I know when I was a kid and I wanted to come to Hollywood, I mean that is the kind of thing that I always had in my vision in front of me was the Hollywood sign.”
The final donation of $900,000 came from Playboy founder Hugh Hefner…who calls the sign “Hollywood’s Eiffel Tower.”
Hefner’s donation caps a yearlong effort by conservationists to keep developers out of the area behind the sign.
