The university is hosting an 11-day leadership program for park managers.

David Hosley is with the university. He says Carter will be speaking about federal legislation created during his presidency – known as the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act.

“Preserving open space in Alaska was a tremendously important thing. And these park managers from around the world are studying how to take on climate change and many other challenges. And Carter’s going to tell them why he thought it was important to create the Alaska Wilderness and how he went about doing it politically.”

Hosley says some of the other topics at the conference will be – how to handle challenges such as budget cuts and illegal marijuana growing operations on park lands.

Hosley says President Carter is covering his own costs to come to the conference…and that UC Merced is not compensating Carter for his visit.
