The West Sacramento-based chain — operator of Raley’s and Bel Air stores in the Sacramento region and Northern California — had some store managers persuade injured employees to use their own health insurance for work-related injuries, which violates California law. Six counties — including Sacramento, Placer and Yolo counties — investigated the case, with authorities talking with 100 employees about Raley’s practices on workers’ compensation. Under the agreement, Raley’s will pay $550,000 in penalties and costs, with about half the money directed to Sacramento, Yolo and Placer counties. Raley’s chief executive officer Michael Teel says the company cooperated with the investigation and has taken steps to make sure the violations won’t happen again. Raley’s has about 13,400 employees, many in the Sacramento region.
