The 2010 Census is kicking its door-to-door efforts into high gear this week. Workers started visiting homes that didn’t return census forms over the weekend … and today, officials came to Sacramento to drum up some publicity. Census employees will visit nearly 200-thousand homes in the areas covered by the Sacramento and Elk Grove centers during the next few weeks. Deputy Regional Director Mike Burns says enumerators plan their visits around a community’s schedule.
Burns: “If you have a lot of retirees, we could be out there at nine o’clock in the morning knocking on doors. And if it’s a working community, they might not start until 3 o’clock in the afternoon.”
Burns says workers are identifiable by their census ID badges, and will never ask for personal information like social security or credit card numbers.
Enumerators will visit a household up to three times and will also make three attempts to reach people by phone.
So far 72 percent of Sacramento residents have been counted…and Citrus Heights, Elk Grove and Roseville are in the mid-seventies. Stockton lags behind with 67 percent.
The national participation rate is 72 percent.
