Roseville Rejects Jail Closure Plan

Roseville is facing an $8.5 million budget deficit.

Police proposed closing the jail and instead…taking prisoners to the Placer County jail in Auburn.

But during a budget workshop this week, Councilman John Allard said closing the jail would be a bad move.

“One of the things that attracts people to this community is it’s a safe place to live. And I know we face some very tough choices about cutting. But I’m going to have a hard time supporting any reduction in jail operation.”

Police Department officials say they’re looking at ways to bring in more money – including taking in federal or state prisoners.

Meanwhile, the Placer County Sheriff’s Department has broken ground in Roseville on a new $78 million correctional facility. Roseville Police will be able to book prisoners into that jail when it opens in 2012.
