Under a proposed contract with Recology, trash would arrive by rail three times a week, joining waste that’s already trucked in from Sutter, Butte, Colusa and Nevada counties.
The community organization YUGAG…or Yuba Group Against Garbage…is worried about impacts to groundwater and air quality.
But Recology’s Adam Alberti says the site can handle more trash.

“They are concerned about additional volumes of waste coming onto the landfill. But the landfill is already permitted to take in the volume that is being anticipated and will not exceed the capacity already in existence.”
Recology does not need permits to move the waste to the site since it owns the landfill…about 40 miles north of Sacramento. But it does need approval to build a short rail spur from the Union Pacific line. In exchange, Recology would pay Yuba County as much as $22 million starting in 2015.
The company will present its plan to the Wheatland city council tonight.
