Elk Grove Adds More Red Light Cameras

The city already has cameras at three other intersections along Laguna Boulevard.

Officer Christopher Trim is with the Elk Grove Police Department. He credits the cameras for a drop in accidents caused by red light runners. But he says motorists are still getting tickets for another kind of infraction.

“There’s still quite a few number of citations for motorists not coming to a full and complete stop before making that right hand turn. We’re just trying to modify those habits so that no one is hurt or seriously injured at one of those intersections.”

Opponents of red light cameras say the devices make motorists too nervous and lead to more rear-end collisions. They also contend the cameras are more about generating revenues than encouraging public safety.

Other Sacramento area law enforcement agencies have also been adding red light cameras to some of the region’s busiest intersections.
