Layoffs, Other Budget Cuts at Sacramento State

Campus officials declined to say what the laid-off employees do because they’re still being notified. But they are staff members, not faculty. In fact, tenured professors and those on tenure track won’t be affected by budget cuts. And unless there are more cuts from the state, furloughs could end by July. Sac State President Alexander Gonzalez says officials have spent the last two years preparing for cuts they knew would come.

Gonzalez: “That’s why we’re in pretty good shape. Rather than fill positions that became open, we just left them open. We had interim people in there, or we didn’t hire at all. So now, some of those positions will be eliminated permanently; others we just won’t fill.”

Still, the vacancies won’t go unnoticed. On top of all the empty positions, the campus isn’t using as many part-time lecturers. And that means students will have fewer options for some of their classes.
