The county’s Child Death Review Team has presented its annual report to the Board of Supervisor’s. It shows that 27 infants died in their sleep in 2008.

Sheila Boxley with the Child Abuse Prevention Center told supervisors all of those deaths happened in unsafe sleeping environments.

“These were infants that were sleeping somewhere other than a crib – with 17 in an adult bed, three on a couch, one on a futon and one in a car seat stroller.”

Boxley says some of the infants were also sleeping in areas cluttered with blankets, pillows and stuffed animals.

The report recommends more public education for new parents on how to prevent sudden-infant-death syndrome.
