Start with Republicans, who have the two biggest primary races this year: Governor and U.S. Senator. A recent Public Policy Institute of California poll showed around one in three voters were still undecided. And in the governor’s race, the PPIC’s Mark Baldassare says polls also show voters going back and forth between Meg Whitman and Steve Poizner.
Baldassare: “The campaigns have gotten very negative on both sides.”
Poizner ad: “Who has the courage and values to stand up to illegal immigration? Not liberal Meg Whitman.”
Whitman ad: “Steve Poizner: liberal on taxes, liberal on spending. Just another liberal Sacramento politician.
Baldassare: “And when people are confronted with negative messages about candidates, they can wait and wait and wait.”
Democrats, meanwhile, don’t have competitive races for Governor or U.S. Senate. And as for the ever-growing number of decline-to-state voters, Baldassare says they’re deciding whether to vote in either party’s primaries, take a non-partisan ballot, or just stay home.

If you haven’t sent your vote-by-mail ballot in yet, you’re running out of time! Brad Buyse with Sacramento County’s elections department says this is not one of those things you can put off to the last minute.
Buyse: “We are encouraging everybody to make sure they mail their vote-by-mail ballots back to us no later than Friday, June 4th to make sure they arrive. Do not be dropping it in the mail on the 7th, which is the day before the election.”
… cause if you do, Buyse says, it probably won’t arrive in time. The ballots must get into the hands of elections officials before polls close – next Tuesday at 8pm.
Another option, if you’re a Sacramento County resident: stop by one of several drop-off locations between now and Friday. They include the county’s administrative center downtown, the elections office on Florin Road, or city clerk’s offices in Sacramento, Galt, Isleton, Citrus Heights, Rancho Cordova or Elk Grove. And if all else fails, you can still hand your vote-by-mail ballot in at a polling place on Election Day.
