Details of the tentative agreement haven’t been released yet. But both the district and the teacher’s union say hundreds of teachers and counselors who had been threatened with layoffs will keep their jobs.

Linda Tuttle is president of the Sacramento City Teachers Association, the teacher’s union. She says although teachers won’t have to take furlough days they’ll see equivalent salary cuts.

“Our teachers generously donate, out of pocket between $500 to $1,000, each year to subsidize the classroom. And this is another form of teachers subsidizing only this time it’s (subsidizing) the district to keep schools open.”

Tuttle says the tentative agreement retains health benefits. If rank-and-file members of the union ratify the deal, it’ll go to the district’s Board of Education for final approval.
