Alex Alvarado with the state Employment Development Department says a lot of those new jobs were in government.
“The federal government made up 2,000 of the job increase this month and its average is 100 for May. And that can most likely be attributed to the Census Bureau hiring. But that is temporary employment.”
Other sectors that saw job gains last month were construction, agriculture and leisure and hospitality. Job declines were posted in professional and business services, financial activities and educational and health services.
Meanwhile, the statewide jobless rate also fell slightly in May…to 12.4%. About 2 million Californians remained out of work last month – that’s 212,000 more than in May of 2009.
