Business Journal: State Manufacturing Jobs Dwindling

California deserves high marks for innovation and venture capital, but gets mediocre grades for manufacturing operations and international trade.

A Ball State University report said the state’s human capital, innovation and even shipping system earns a “B” grade or better, but its manufacturing environment is merely middle of the road compared to other states. And the Golden State has an almost failing grade for its expensive benefit costs.

If you add it all up, it’s some of the reasons why many manufacturers are either closing or moving out of state. California has lost about 600,000 manufacturing jobs since 2001, including about 5,000 during the past several months in the Sacramento region.

The best states for manufacturing? That would be Kansas, Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, Ohio and Kentucky.
