Stockton Approves Police Cuts

To help balance the budget most of the city's employee organizations agreed to salary and benefit concessions. Citing the severity of previous cuts unions representing, police and firefighters, refused to make any concessions for the upcoming fiscal year.

Stockton Mayor Ann Johnston says the police and fire departments are still going to have to make some sacrifices.

“Public safety takes up 75% of our general fund budget. We're going to have to lay off police officers. We're going to probably have to close fire stations.”

According to the plan adopted last night either 26 or 66 police officers will be getting pink slips. The number will depend largely on the outcome of negotiations with union representatives over the next week.

The relationship between the local government and the police officer's association is contentious. The organization has billboards around town depicting Stockton as dangerous because of budget cuts.
