Governor Orders Minimum Wage For State Workers

Governor Schwarzenegger has ordered the State Controller to reduce state workers’ pay to the federal minimum wage. Lynelle Jolley is with the Department of Personnel Administration. She says the Governor is simply complying with the law:

“Since the Controller doesn’t have authority to issue full wages to employees without a budget this instruction advises the controller ho to implement federal minimum wage during this work period.”

The Governor tried to do the same thing last year, but State Controller John Chiang refused, saying it was against federal law. The issue is still tied up in the courts. Not all state workers would be affected by the change. Some – including appointees and elected officials – get no pay at all. Others will likely be exempt under new tentative union contracts. Jolley says there’s one easy way to solve the dispute:

“This will all go away if the legislature passes a budget soon.”

At this point, that doesn’t look likely
