The July 4th holiday is traditionally a busy time for local firefighters and this year is no different. Captain Christian Pebbles with the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District says emergency requests doubled on Sunday.
“On July 3rd we had right around 150 calls and on July 4th we had almost 300.”
Some of the incidents that fire crews responded to include two homes that were destroyed last night in the Laguna neighborhood of Elk Grove. Investigators say it looks like used fireworks weren’t disposed of properly there. And Pebbles says there were more house fires attributed to fireworks…
“We had one for sure that was in the Antelope area last night. And we have a couple that were undetermined on the cause. But being the holiday season it very well could be that way. So there are definitely a few and that’s pretty standard for the 4th of July.”
Also yesterday, there was a big grass fire in a rural part of Roseville that scorched several hundred acres. But investigators don’t think fireworks started it. They suspect the blaze ignited from sparks after a bird hit a power line.
