Most of the people who lost their jobs in the Sacramento area last month had worked for the U.S. Census. Alex Alvarado is a labor market consultant with the state Employment Development Department.
“We always knew those jobs were temporary and we were expecting the Census jobs to be lost in June.”
1,300 people lost their federal government jobs last month. Another 500 state and local government workers became unemployed as well. And Alvarado says even though the private sector added jobs in manufacturing; leisure and hospitality; food services; and recreation, they weren’t enough to offset the government losses.
“In June, typically the private sector does gain jobs and we actually gained less than a typical June.”
