Volunteer Ambassadors Go After Water Wasters

The city has recruited a dozen volunteers to go door-to-door warning about the evils of gutter-flooding.

“They are Water Conservation Ambassadors. These are volunteers who are interested in helping our community save water.”

Jessica Hess is with the city’s Utilities Department. She says the ambassadors are a mix of people…from students to seniors…all passionate about saving water. They’ll be talking to people about how to get rebates for installing things like low-flow toilets…and when the best time to water a lawn is.

“When folks see the city approach they kind of get on the defensive – “the water police are here.” Using a volunteer however, it’s more neighbor to neighbor and much more friendly contact about these topics that can be a little bit difficult as we go through a culture change.”

That culture change includes getting ready for water meters. All city water users will be on meters by the year 2020.

Hess says the city is looking for more volunteer Water Conservation Ambassadors…and will be holding a training session next week.
