Business Journal: Recession Hammers State's Construction Industry

Associated General Contractors says the four-county region has about 36,600 construction jobs today. That’s 18 percent lower than a year ago — and less than half of the 77,000 in September 2005, the historic peak employment month for the industry.
Construction has been hammered during the bad economy, possibly the worst of any industry. Sacramento finished at No. 323 among the 337 metropolitan regions surveyed, but fared much better than last-place Chicago, which lost 21,000 jobs. California has lost about 79,000 construction-related jobs during the past year, the most in the nation.
