The new 25-cent-piece is part of the U.S. Mint’s America the Beautiful Quarters Program. It’s emblazoned with the image of the Merced River and El Capitan. Kari Cobb is a Yosemite Park Ranger:
“Now El Capitan is the largest granite monolith in the world and it’s really hard to miss when you come into the park so it’s a very good iconic image of Yosemite to put on that quarter.”
Cobb says…the first time she laid eyes on the new quarter, she was bowled over.
“I’m very surprised that they could take such a beautiful scenery and put it on such a small quarter and have the detailing. Those sculptors are amazing.”
The Yosemite quarter is the third to be released in the series…following coins commemorating Yellowstone and Hot Springs National Parks. A Grand Canyon quarter will come out in September.
