State Fair Attendance Up

More than 740,000 people came to the fair at Sacramento’s Cal Expo…a 10% jump over last year.

General Manager Norb Bartosik says starting the fair about a month earlier while school kids were still on vacation was one reason attendance was up. He says another reason was lower food prices. And there was one more thing:

“After the first four days we had great weather.”

But things weren’t all sunny and bright at the fair. Robbers made off with a reported $100,000 in cash from a food vendor. Bartosik says another low point was when Cal Expo police shot and killed a stampeding pregnant cow. Many fairgoers were upset after learning of the incident.

“We’re taking…have taken and will continue to look at the protocols that need to be addressed so that that type of an incident will never happen again.”

Meanwhile, Bartosik says the fair’s board of directors will decide later this month whether to start next year’s fair in mid-July as well.
