It's part of the annual "National Night Out" event…aimed at
building community spirit to fight crime.
Sergeant Norm Leong is with the Sacramento Police Department. He says there's been a lot more interest in neighborhood crime watch programs lately.
"We're finding in Sacramento that more people in the community want information on what's going on in their neighborhood and there's more involvement. And I think everyone realizes with budget cuts and downsizing of the department that they need to get involved in order to make sure their community is safe."
Leong says 90-neighborhoods throughout the city are planning events such as barbecues, ice cream socials…and flashlight parades.
Police in Elk Grove says about 40 neighborhoods in that city will be holding National Night Out celebrations as well.
