The city of Sacramento reached a last-minute deal with its largest union Friday afternoon. It includes one furlough day each month and freezes step increases for the next two years. The deal means Friday wasn't the last day of work for 80 employees in departments like parks and transportation.
Meantime, the county’s sheriffs union will vote over the weekend on contract changes to avoid layoffs for 85 deputies. The proposal encourages top law enforcement officials to retire early by boosting their pensions. The remaining deputies would pay more into the pension system each year.
Both deals still need to be approved by each union’s rank-and-file members and the city council or county board of supervisors.
