Governor asks Judge to Let Gay Marriages Resume Immediately

In an unusual move, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has asked a federal judge to allow same-sex couples to marry immediately. The court filing comes just days after Judge Vaughn Walker overturned the state’s ban on such marriages.   However, opponents of gay marriage have asked the court to block the ruling from taking effect while they appeal.
Schwarzenegger has twice vetoed legislation to legalize same-sex marriage. But his Press Secretary, Aaron McLear says he was respecting voters’ wishes:
“Before he was upholding the will of the people and he’s always said until a judge overturns the will of the people, the will of the people stands. And that’s what happened.”
Attorney General and Democratic Gubernatorial Candidate Jerry Brown filed a similar request earlier today.
It’s not yet known when the judge will rule on the issue.
