CHP Hunting for Distracted Drivers Tuesday

It’s the first of two “zero tolerance” days where the CHP and Northern California law enforcement officials are focusing on catching distracted drivers.

CHP Officer Adrian Quintero says it’s illegal to text while driving – or make a call without a hands-free device. And no, he says, you’re not fooling anyone when you keep your phone out of sight on your lap!

Quintero: “The confusion is, a lot of these individuals within our community, they think, you know, if I have it on speaker phone in my hand, it’s OK, that’s all right. That’s actually a violation of the section. So you’ll see them – it’s pretty blatant, where they have the phone up to their ear and they’re actually just having a conversation while they’re driving their vehicles.”

Quintero says motorists without hands-free devices often drive the way someone under the influence might: varying their speeds or struggling to stay in a lane. He says that danger – and an increase in citations in recent months – are prompting the “zero tolerance” days today and August 18th.
